EU Suspends Sanctions on Syria, Including Energy and Banking

European Union countries suspended a variety of sanctions against Syria on Monday, including restrictions on energy, banking, transport, and reconstruction. The EU has imposed numerous sanctions targeting individuals and economic sectors in Syria. These sanctions were initiated after insurgent forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), removed the former President in December. During a meeting in Brussels, EU foreign ministers decided to lift restrictions on the energy sector, including oil, gas, and electricity, as well as sanctions on the transport sector. Additionally, they lifted asset freezes for five banks, eased limitations on the Syrian central bank, and extended an exemption to aid in humanitarian deliveries. Some sanctions related to the Assad government continue, such as those on arms trading, dual-use goods, surveillance software, and the international trade of Syrian cultural heritage items. EU states pledged to monitor the Syrian situation to ensure that the suspensions are appropriate.
