The European Commission announced on Wednesday the cancellation of proposed regulations regarding technology patents, AI, and consumer privacy within messaging apps. The Commission cited the unlikelihood of approval by EU lawmakers and member countries for these drafts.

One of the regulations aimed at standardizing technologies used in various electronic devices faced opposition from industries and major tech companies. This specific rule had been proposed two years ago to streamline legal processes and costs.

In response to the decision, Nokia expressed support for abandoning the rules, emphasizing the potential negative consequences for European innovation. Conversely, the Fair Standards Alliance, a lobbying group representing companies like BMW, Tesla, Google, and Amazon, expressed surprise and concern over the Commission's choice.

Another scrapped proposal involved consumer rights in relation to AI technology, with the Commission considering the possibility of revisiting the issue. Additionally, plans to subject messaging apps like WhatsApp and Skype to stringent privacy regulations comparable to telecom providers were dismissed due to ongoing disagreements among EU nations and outdated aspects of the proposal.
