On January 23, Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity launched the Perplexity Assistant, an agent-based assistant for Android devices aiming to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT and existing assistants like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.
The company, backed by Nvidia and Jeff Bezos, stated that the Perplexity Assistant can perform tasks such as booking dinner reservations, arranging rides, and setting reminders. Available in 15 languages on Google's Play Store, the company expressed interest in making it accessible on iOS pending approval from Apple.
OpenAI introduced a similar tool called Tasks to ChatGPT Team and Pro subscribers on its web platform last week. Amazon and Apple are also advancing their assistant technologies.
Last year, Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri and partnered with OpenAI for its use with user consent. Meanwhile, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced in December that an updated version of Alexa is in development and set to launch soon.
