Croatia's deputy prime minister has resigned following the emergence of a video showing him shooting randomly from a moving car.

In the footage, Josip Dabro is seen in the passenger seat conversing, laughing, and singing to loud music, before picking up a pistol and firing shots through an open window into the darkness.

Representing the hard-right nationalist party Homeland Movement, Dabro stated that the video was from several years ago and that he was firing training bullets.

This incident adds to the challenges faced by Croatia's coalition government, established in May 2024, with official condemnation of Dabro's actions as "inappropriate and irresponsible".

In a resignation post on Facebook, Dabro, who also served as minister for agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, mentioned his decision not to be a disruption to the government.

He cited facing "considerable pressure and threats" due to reform efforts within his department.

The video was released earlier in the week. Dabro's party is part of a coalition government with Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's center-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.

Previously, Health Minister Vili Bros was dismissed last November amid a corruption probe.

Following the outcome, Plenkovic commented that "Milanovic offers nothing" and refrained from congratulating him. In Croatia, Presidents primarily fulfill ceremonial duties.
