Colombia's Minister: Decision on NATO Fighter Jet Purchase Expected in Months

Colombia's Defense Minister, Pedro Sanchez, stated the country will choose a NATO member to buy new fighter jets within months. Amid concerns about illegal armed groups exploiting peace initiatives, Colombia aims to replace its aged Israeli Kfir fleet with F-16s from the U.S., Gripen from Sweden, or Rafale from France.

Sanchez, a former air force general turned minister, stressed the importance of safeguarding Colombia's sovereignty. The government had allocated $3.65 billion in 2023 to purchase around 16 planes, but specifics on the spending and quantity remain undisclosed.

Illegal armed factions like ELN rebels, ex-FARC militants, and Clan del Golfo have grown in strength and territory during peace processes under President Gustavo Petro, even as he nears the end of his term without securing significant peace agreements.

Sanchez highlighted the groups' escalation of drug trafficking and illegal mining, fueling their military might and betraying Colombia. Any reduction in U.S. military aid would impede anti-narcotics efforts, with Washington currently providing roughly $400 million annually, as Colombia produced 2,664 metric tons of cocaine in 2023.

Sanchez emphasized the necessity of unity between the U.S. and Colombia to combat criminal elements effectively.
