Colombia's Defense Minister Ivan Velasquez has definitively resigned from President Gustavo Petro's cabinet. His departure, announced in a social media post by the ministry on Tuesday, adds to the exits of the environment and interior ministers.
Petro requested the resignations of all his ministers on Sunday following a tense televised cabinet meeting that prompted several officials to step down.
The ministry stated that Velasquez submitted his irrevocable resignation, in response to media reports. Some cabinet members objected publicly to the appointment of a controversial new advisor, former senator Armando Benedetti, and the new foreign minister Laura Sarabia during the meeting.
Other ministers, including the new finance minister Diego Guevara, have either submitted or are planning to submit their resignations as per protocol, according to their ministries.
While Petro has a history of asking for mass resignations to enact government changes, he has also retained some ministers in their positions.
Currently visiting Dubai, Petro has yet to announce replacements for any of the vacant ministerial positions.
