Chinese Universities Introduce DeepSeek Courses to Leverage AI Growth

In February, universities across China have introduced artificial intelligence (AI) courses based on the breakthrough of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which has been compared to a "Sputnik moment" for China, attracting significant attention.

This initiative aligns with Chinese authorities' efforts to enhance scientific and technological innovation in educational institutions to drive new sources of growth for the country's second-largest economy.

DeepSeek, headquartered in Hangzhou, has received accolades from Silicon Valley executives and U.S. tech company engineers for its advanced models DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, comparable to those of OpenAI and Meta.

For instance, Shenzhen University announced this week the launch of an AI course centered on DeepSeek, covering key technologies as well as addressing security, privacy, ethics, and related challenges.

The university aims to "explore how to find a balance between technological innovation and ethical norms."

Zhejiang University also kicked off specialized DeepSeek courses in February, and Shanghai's Jiao Tong University has integrated DeepSeek to upgrade its AI learning tools, according to its official WeChat account. Renmin University of China has utilized DeepSeek in various areas, bringing new momentum to teaching, research, and campus operations.

In a recent development, China issued its first national action plan in January to build a "strong" education system by 2035, with a focus on establishing a high-quality and globally competitive educational framework.

Notably, Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, participated in a meeting with President Xi Jinping and prominent figures from China's technology sector, including Alibaba.
