In its fourth-quarter press release on Friday, U.S. oil producer Chevron referred to the "Gulf of America," aligning with U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to rename the region from Gulf of Mexico. This change is part of a series of initiatives announced by Trump at the start of his term. The new name will be officially recognized once updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System, with Google confirming that the adjustment will be limited to U.S. territories.
While Chevron adopted the new terminology, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum noted Google's position on this matter last Thursday. Hess, a U.S. oil company, and Shell, a UK-based corporation, maintained the traditional "Gulf of Mexico" designation in their earnings reports for the fourth quarter. In contrast, Exxon Mobil did not make any reference to the gulf in its financial disclosures on Friday.
