Caribbean Leaders Seek Clarity Amid US Consideration of Broad Travel Bans

Leaders from the Caribbean are seeking clarification following the public disclosure of a draft U.S. government list that could potentially impact their nations in the latest move of President Donald Trump’s migration enforcement. The U.S. State Department's spokesperson Tammy Bruce disavowed the list, emphasizing a review process initiated by the president's executive order to enhance national security regarding visas and entry permissions.

President Trump's administration has pledged mass deportations of migrants, with half of the countries on the list being African. Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Lucia were flagged in the draft for potential travel restrictions if unspecified "deficiencies" are not rectified within 60 days.

Despite no official communication from the U.S., Caribbean leaders expressed their concerns. Antigua and Barbuda requested clarity on the proposed bans and deficiencies, emphasizing the need for prompt discussion and resolution. Ambassador Ronald Sanders highlighted that a review does not equate to a ban, emphasizing the potential for positive outcomes.

Dominica’s prime minister and Saint Kitts and Nevis committed to address any issues once formal communication is received. Haiti faces partial suspensions, including for students and tourists, amid a crisis that has spurred mass displacement. Cuba and Venezuela could experience complete visa suspensions due to political and economic situations.

Notably, the governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Haiti have not responded to requests for comments from Reuters regarding these developments.
