Canadian veteran David Lavery has been released after being arrested in Kabul, Afghanistan on Nov. 11, thanks to mediation by Qatar, as stated by an official familiar with the situation on Sunday.

The circumstances of Lavery's arrest remain unclear. The organization where Lavery was employed, the Veterans Transition Network, mentioned last year that he frequently traveled to Afghanistan for humanitarian purposes.

According to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, "Mr. Lavery's release was facilitated in response to a request from the Canadian government to Qatar, leveraging Qatar's prior mediation experience in Afghanistan."

Currently, Lavery is in Doha, the capital of Qatar, receiving a medical evaluation, the official noted.
