Canada's Versatile Finance Minister Takes on Fifth Cabinet Role in Six Years

Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, appointed to his role on Friday, is known for his versatility and trustworthiness among his colleagues. At 54, Champagne, with his spirited demeanor and good humor, first pursued careers in law and business before joining the ruling Liberal Party in 2015.

As the former innovation minister, Champagne spearheaded efforts to attract significant investments into the electric vehicle and auto battery sector, facing challenges amid global setbacks, including in Canada.

Transitioning to the trade ministry in January 2017, Champagne played a pivotal role in a successful campaign across the United States to uphold the North American Free Trade Agreement, despite threats of dissolution by the President.

Moving on to the infrastructure portfolio in July 2018, Champagne shifted once more in November 2019 to the position of foreign minister, before returning to the innovation ministry in January 2021.

When former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau disclosed his resignation plans in January, Champagne was considered a possible successor. However, he decided to withdraw from the race to focus on addressing challenges posed by tariffs.

Reflecting on his decision, Champagne admitted, "It was probably one of the most difficult decisions of my life but I think it's the right one at the right time."

Champagne supported Mark Carney, who ultimately succeeded Trudeau and was sworn in as prime minister on Friday.
