Canada Assures US of Progress in Strengthening Border

Canada's Public Safety Minister David McGuinty stated that Canada's advancements in enhancing border security with the United States and combating drug smuggling should meet the approval of the Trump administration. Concurrently, President Donald Trump affirmed that his proposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada would proceed as planned on March 4 due to continued drug inflows from both countries.

McGuinty, speaking in Washington before high-level talks with U.S. officials, expressed, "We are quite convinced that the efforts we've made thus far should satisfy the U.S. administration." He emphasized, "The evidence is irrefutable - progress is being made. In my view, any test that was put on Canada in terms of showing progress and meeting standards for the border - I believe those have been met."

Official data indicates that the majority of intercepted drugs in the U.S. are sourced from Mexico. The Canada Border Services Agency announced a national campaign focusing on intercepting illegal contraband, specifically targeting fentanyl and other synthetic narcotics. The agency stated, "During this blitz, border services officers will be increasing examinations of inbound and outbound shipments."
