Dnipro, Ukraine, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Liudmyla Parybus questions the widespread optimism regarding President Trump's potential impact: "Why is everyone putting their hopes in Trump?" The 20-year-old student in Kyiv holds a skeptical view, stating, "I don't put any hope in him. In the end, it depends on us."

This prevailing skepticism is echoed by many Ukrainians who doubt Trump's ability to swiftly negotiate peace after his inauguration. Marharyta Deputat, a 29-year-old sales manager, asserts, "Our fate is in our own hands. We can't rely on anyone else."

Hanna Horbachova, a 55-year-old bakery owner who fled conflict in Donetsk years ago, remains wary of depending on a peace agreement, foreseeing possible further Russian aggression towards Dnipro. Despite her doubts, she acknowledges the slim chance for Trump to establish a positive legacy by fulfilling his promises: "Trump has the opportunity to go down in history as a savior of a huge nation."

There are conflicted opinions among Ukrainians regarding the possibility of Trump's involvement in hastening a ceasefire. A recent poll suggests varying expectations, with some respondents hopeful for peace by 2025, while others anticipate prolonged conflict.

Not everyone is dismissive of Trump's potential role in the peace process; Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Merezhko believes Trump has the opportunity to secure peace in Ukraine, shaping a lasting legacy. However, the reality of the situation indicates a prolonged diplomatic process, with Trump being warned that resolving the Ukraine war will likely take considerable time.

The differing stances of the warring parties and the complexities of past ceasefire agreements reveal the challenges of reaching a lasting peace settlement in Ukraine. Former and current Ukrainian leaders emphasize the importance of NATO membership to deter future Russian aggression and ensure a stable peace in the region.
