On March 13, a panel of five judges from Brazil's Supreme Court is scheduled to convene on March 25 to determine the validity of the charges leveled against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro regarding an alleged coup attempt, as announced by the court on Thursday.
Last month, Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet accused Bolsonaro of orchestrating a plot to overthrow the government and destabilize the country's democracy following his defeat in the 2022 election.
If the charges are upheld, Bolsonaro will be indicted and must face a trial.
In addition to Bolsonaro, the Supreme Court will deliberate on whether charges should be accepted against some of his allies, including former ministers from his administration.
Bolsonaro and his legal team have maintained that he never endorsed any efforts to subvert Brazil's democratic legal framework or the institutions that safeguard it.
