Brazil Highlights Encouraging Conversation with Senior U.S. Trade Official

Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin had a "positive" video call with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday, focusing on U.S. tariff policy. Lutnick, a key trade adviser to President Trump, engaged in discussions with Alckmin, who also holds roles as Brazil's trade, industry, and development minister.

President Trump's announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports are set to take effect on March 12, impacting Brazil as a significant source of U.S. steel imports. During the call, Lutnick indicated he would relay Alckmin's request to postpone the tariffs to President Trump, as reported by a Brazilian government source to Reuters.

Although Alckmin's office did not confirm the tariff postponement request, it stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue between both governments to address tariff concerns and other matters. There were hints from Brazilian news sources that the U.S. might consider postponing the tariffs on Brazilian goods.

Alckmin's office highlighted plans for further bilateral discussions in the coming days, mentioning the participation of United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in the call.
