On January 31, Toronto-based Bitcoin miner Bitfarms announced that it has engaged two consultants to explore converting some of its facilities into artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, in response to the increasing demand. Crypto miners typically possess extensive land and power resources, which are vital for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI data centers.

To take advantage of the AI trend, many miners are repurposing parts of their operations into data centers, leveraging their existing infrastructure. However, critics argue that AI data centers are more advanced.

Bitfarms disclosed that the consultants, Appleby Strategy Group and World Wide Technology, will assess its North American sites and provide guidance on its computing and AI strategy, as well as help in marketing the sites to potential clients.

Earlier this month, Riot Platforms also revealed plans to explore AI and computing applications for segments of its facility in Navarro County, Texas.

Bitfarms CEO Ben Gagnon stated, "The contracts linked to HPC/AI customers offer consistent cash flows and earnings, while our Bitcoin mining operations will continue to benefit from the potential growth of Bitcoin."
