Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, known for her role in the popular 2001 TV series Meteor Garden, has passed away at 48 due to pneumonia, as reported by local media.

Hsu, a prominent figure in the Mandarin-speaking world, gained recognition in countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand after Meteor Garden was dubbed in local languages.

Fans expressed shock and sorrow, with a comment on Weibo saying, "I can't believe it," reflecting the sentiments of many.

While visiting Japan, Hsu fell ill and succumbed to pneumonia triggered by influenza, confirmed by her sister Dee Hsu to Taiwan's TVBS News.

Barbie Hsu, who had a history of epilepsy and heart issues, was hospitalized for seizures in the past.

She is survived by her husband, South Korean singer DJ Koo, and two children from a previous marriage.

Hsu started her career at 17 in a pop duo with her sister Dee, becoming known for their hosting skills before gaining fame with Meteor Garden.

The show, based on a Japanese comic, propelled her to stardom beyond Chinese entertainment, portraying Shancai in a teen romance drama with a strong following.
