Aurora Prepares Self-Driving Trucks for Harsh Weather Ahead of Commercial Launch

Aurora Innovation is set to enable its self-driving trucks to operate without a driver in inclement weather as it prepares for commercial trips in Texas this year. The autonomous trucks are expected to begin operating on public roads in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona in 2025, adhering to speed limits that range from 25 to 75 miles per hour.

In January, the company announced plans to launch its service in Texas in April. Recently, it revealed its intention to expand the operational design domain (ODD) for its autonomous vehicles to encompass harsh weather conditions. The ODD outlines the specific conditions and areas where self-driving vehicles can function, considering geography, weather, and other factors.

These trucks will operate in suburban and urban environments, navigate dense traffic, and function both day and night, including in highway construction zones marked by cones and barriers.

Aurora will also enhance testing for these trucks, incorporating simulations in virtual environments, evaluations on closed tracks, and performance monitoring on public roads prior to the commercial launch.

Earlier this year, the Uber-backed company signed a partnership with Nvidia and Germany's Continental to deploy driverless trucks.
