Argentina Seeks Trade Agreement in Washington Amid Threat of Trump Tariffs

Argentina's foreign minister is scheduled to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday to lay the groundwork for a potential trade deal between the two nations. This visit coincides with plans for President Donald Trump to announce reciprocal measures on April 2, referred to as "Liberation Day," which could have significant implications for global trade.

Countries are actively seeking to negotiate terms with the U.S., and Argentina—an exporter of grains, lithium, and energy—hopes to capitalize on the ideological alignment with Trump and its libertarian President Javier Milei. The Argentine government has expressed its intention to meet with Rubio to enhance the strategic alliance between the two nations.

Discussions will also involve U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, focusing on strengthening bilateral trade and laying the foundation for a solid trade agreement.

Since taking office in 2023, Milei has advocated for reduced trade barriers as part of his libertarian free-market strategy and has intensified efforts for a trade agreement with Washington this year. He was one of the first world leaders to visit Trump after his election and attended his inauguration, with Trump labeling him his "favorite president."

Milei has also engaged frequently with Trump's advisor Elon Musk, seeking inspiration for tax cuts and policies that reduce the role of government.

Argentina's primary trade partners include Brazil, China, and the United States. Last year, its top exports to the U.S. consisted of crude oil, metals, and chemicals, while major imports included processed industrial supplies, fuels, capital goods, and vehicle parts.

Rubio is expected to meet Werthein at the State Department around midday in Washington.
