Apple's iPhone devices can now test SpaceX-owned Starlink's direct-to-cell capability for space-based coverage, as announced by T-Mobile, a partner in the initiative.
T-Mobile and Elon Musk's SpaceX are currently conducting a trial run of the Starlink cell network, following approval granted by the Federal Communications Commission in November last year.
The trial currently offers 'text via satellite', with plans to include voice and data features in the future, as stated on the T-Mobile website.
Initially, T-Mobile had limited eligible devices for network testing to a few Android smartphones. However, with the latest iOS 18.3 software update, iPhone devices have been included.
According to a report by Bloomberg News on Tuesday, Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile have been collaborating discreetly to incorporate support for the network into the most recent iPhone software.
Apple and SpaceX have not responded to Reuters' inquiries beyond standard business hours.
Last October, the FCC mandated SpaceX and T-Mobile to activate Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capability to provide coverage for mobile phones in areas of North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene.
