Amazon's MGM Studios Secures Creative Control of the 'James Bond' Franchise

Amazon's MGM Studios will assume creative control of the James Bond film franchise through a new joint venture with long-standing rights holders Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, announced the technology giant on Thursday.

This move resolves uncertainty surrounding one of Hollywood's most enduring and beloved film series, following reports in December that relations between Broccoli and Amazon had become strained, potentially delaying a new Bond movie.

The Bond franchise, known for its recent film "No Time to Die" grossing nearly $800 million globally in 2021, will remain co-owned by all parties involved, according to Amazon.

With a vast catalog of over 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows, Amazon aims to enhance its competitiveness against streaming competitors like Netflix and Walt Disney. The company now gains distribution rights and creative control over the Bond series.

Broccoli expressed her decision, stating, "I feel it is time to focus on my other projects," while acknowledging Wilson and herself have overseen the franchise since 1995.

This agreement enables Amazon to play a more active role in the Bond series, leading up to the highly anticipated 26th Bond film and casting announcements to succeed Daniel Craig.

Speculation on the next Bond actor is rife, with actors like James Norton, Theo James, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson being top contenders, although fan discussions also include heavyweight actors such as Idris Elba and Henry Cavill.

Broccoli hinted that the next Bond will likely be a man in his thirties, ensuring an enduring portrayal of the character.

Rooted in Ian Fleming's novels, the Bond franchise has endured for over 60 years, grossing more than $7 billion globally, solidifying its status as one of the most successful film franchises.

"We... look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world," commented Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.
