Since Project Kuiper's announcement in 2019, with a commitment of $10 billion for its development, the competition has intensified. SpaceX has already launched approximately 8,000 Starlink satellites and has attracted over five million internet users across 125 countries, significantly influencing the satellite communications landscape.
While Amazon has been slower to launch compared to SpaceX, it believes that its leading web services and consumer products business could provide a competitive advantage in attracting Kuiper customers and mass-producing consumer terminals required for satellite communication.
In 2022, Amazon secured 83 rocket launches through partnerships with ULA, France's Arianespace, and Blue Origin, the company founded by Jeff Bezos, marking the industry's largest launch deal amid preparations for its satellite deployment. Earlier in 2023, Amazon successfully launched two prototype satellites, paving the way for Kuiper's future expansion.
