Amazon has lost its appeal against a record fine of 746 million euros ($812.4 million) imposed by Luxembourg's privacy regulator four years ago, as the administrative court ruled in favor of the regulatory authority.
The Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD) confirmed that the court dismissed Amazon's appeal in a ruling issued on March 18. The penalty stemmed from Amazon's processing of personal data in violation of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which has set a strict standard for privacy regulations worldwide.
While the CNPD's decision includes measures for Amazon to address the issues identified, these measures will be suspended during the appeal period. Amazon has indicated that it is considering further legal action against the court ruling.
The company criticized the CNPD's decision, stating that the fine was based on "subjective interpretations of the law" for which the regulator had not provided prior interpretive guidance.
