On Wednesday, Adobe released the first public version of an artificial intelligence tool designed to generate video clips, named the Firefly Video Model. Although the pricing structure was unveiled, pricing tailored for major users like studios will not be set until later this year.
Competing against Sora by ChatGPT creator OpenAI and startup Runway, Adobe's model stands out for its focus on generating clips compatible with Premiere Pro, its leading video editing software, as used by film and television studios.
One key distinction is that Adobe's emphasis is on refining existing shots through the generation of snippets that enhance or fix flawed shots captured on production sets.
The service will create five-second clips at 1080p resolution, with a monthly subscription allowing for the generation of 20 clips for $9.99 or 70 clips for $29.99. In comparison, OpenAI offers 50 videos for $20/month at a lower resolution, with an additional $200 plan for longer, higher resolution videos.
Moreover, Adobe is developing a "Premium" pricing plan for studios and high-volume users, with pricing specifics scheduled for release later this year. Adobe's vice president of generative AI, Alexandru Costin, highlighted their commitment to quality over length, prioritizing optimal motion, structure, and definition to achieve a cinematic look over simply producing longer, less usable clips.
