Mahmoud Khalil, a recent graduate of Columbia University, was detained by the Department of Homeland Security without being charged with a crime almost a week ago. According to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, the U.S. Justice Department is investigating whether protests at Columbia University violated federal terrorism laws. Amy Belsher from the NYCLU criticized claims regarding Khalil's potential deportation as "extremely misleading" and stressed the requirement for evidence of deportability in immigration court. Khalil is presently detained at the LaSalle Detention Facility in Louisiana and is anticipated to remain there at least until March 17th.
